The Franschhoek Literary Festival (FLF) 2011 has added yet another informative book to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) literature by launching a book entitled The Young Gay Guys Guide to Safer Gay Sex, with more than 14000 copies set to be distributed freely to the public.
Robin Malan, the Director of Junkets Publisher announced that 14000 copies of the book will be distributed across the country.
“I’m excited about the final product it looks great and I have had the illustrations made by a super intelligent Roberto Millan who made the illustrations and cover perfect for the book”, says Malan.
The FLF was started in 2007 by a committee of six volunteers who aimed to create a festival of mostly English speaking local writers. The ultimate goal was to raise funds for a new community library.
Malan further said, “The book covers aspects of low risk and high risk gay sex for the young gay men out there, and says it as it is in plain English. As I think it will make more of an impact if written in a hard-core and entertaining manner.”
10000 copies of the guide will be distributed by the Aids Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) through its outreach programmes in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region and 4000 to be distributed by the Triangle Project in the Western Cape townships, Cape Flats and the West Coast areas.
Malan acknowledged that contributions from two organisations proved to be vital, “The Aids Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) through their funding from the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Triangle Project have both donated substantial sums of money to the project”, he said.
At the recent launch held at the Garden Restaurant in Franschhoek, Western Cape on Saturday 14 May 2011 the illustrator of the Guide Roberto Millan graced the event with his presence, Roberto is a Master’s student at the University of Stellenbosch.
“This is a fantastic initiative that I’m proud to be associated with. I think it takes real guts to publish something like this and I’m confident it will pay off in more ways than one”, said Malan expressing his bliss.
