We condemn the killing of two gay men in Haiti

Published: July 21, 2013

More than 42 activists and representatives who work on human rights and support the LGBT community, who represent 19 Haitian and Dominican civil society groups, condemn the killing of two homosexuals and the hostilities caused to others in the homophobic march headlined “No to gay marriage in Haiti” called by religious fundamentalists.

We want the attacks and the violence, based on hate speech, discrimination and criminalization of the gay community, that the LGBT population is subjected to in Haiti, to stop.

Life, dignity and all rights must be respected and protected on the part of governments, therefore we demand that the Haitian Government speak out on this horrible and tragic situation, as their own negligence has contributed to these people being killed, by not putting in place the protection necessary for this type of demonstration.
We are demanding that everyone involved in the convening of this march be brought to justice, and those who acted intellectually and materially and who caused the attacks and injuries to other persons involved be arrested.

We call on the Haitian government to provide protection for human rights defenders, and especially for identifiable members of the country’s LGBT population, who right now fear for their lives.

The Haitian constitution cites non-discrimination in its Article 19, Haiti is a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the OAS Convention on the eradication of all forms of discrimination, and other international instruments related to the preservation of life, human development, etc. and as such must respect and ensure respect for these in its territory without distinction to entities or persons.
