Top Gay Tory to Fight Polish Homophobia

The British Conservative party plans to send its most senior gay operative, Nick Herbert, to Poland to help its Polish conservative allies overcome their strong aversion to homosexuality. Herbert is scheduled to take part in the EuroPride parade in Warsaw in June — an event Polish conservatives in the past described as one intended for “the promotion of homosexuality.”

“We would not join with parties that had unacceptable views,” U.K. Conservative leader David Cameron told the Guardian. “But we do recognize that, particularly in central and eastern Europe, there are parties that have still got some way to go on the journey of recognizing full rights for gay people. We are helping them make that journey.”
