The HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men-behaviour beats science

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic that started more than 30 years ago remains one of the greatest public-health concerns worldwide: in 2009, it was estimated that 33.3 million individuals were infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with 2.6 million new infections globally (see graphic; [1]). Even in the affluent countries of North America, Australia, New Zealand and Western and Central Europe, the numbers of people infected with HIV have grown over the past two decades.
