The Coalition of African Lesbians (CAL) has denounced the decision by the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) to refuse them observer status.

“We have finally received a formal letter from the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights that our application for observer status has been declined.

It [letter] has no reasons why our application has been declined. The immediate thing that comes to mind for me is that they must provide reasons for their decision and that we must appeal the decision”, said Fikile Vilakazi, Director for the Coalition of African Lesbians.

“It is disgusting that a human rights institution like the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights could arrive at a decision that violates the right to freedom of expression”, said CAL in a statement.

In a letter to CAL, Dr Mary Maboreke Executive Secretary of the ACHPR states that “the ACHPR has deliberated on your application and decided not to grant Observer Status to the Coalition of African Lesbians” and offers no further explanation as to why the application was declined.
