Sexual mixing patterns and behavioral features of men who have sex with men in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, China

Background: Of the estimated 700,000 HIV positives still living, 11.0 percent through homosexual transmission. This paper is to study sexual mixing patterns and behavioral features of men who have sex with men and analyze potential HIV prevalent risk in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, China.

Methods: A face to face questionnaire investigation was conducted among 673 MSM from May to July,2006 in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, China. Mixing matrices were computed based on characteristics of MSM and their sexual partners and different models were used for goodness-of-fit.

Results: 648 questionnaires were completed. Age and marriage status of sexual mixing patterns were assortative and values of Q were 0.03 and 0.41, respectively. Values of Q were great different according to age and marriage status of sexual mixing Patterns among different sites. A tendency for age and marriage pairing to cluster around main diagonal(table 5,table 6),suggesting that MSM and their partners were similar ages and marriages, furthermore, young MSM tended to have older partners. Most of MSM had large numbers of sexual partners,frequently changed exual partners. The proportions of consistent condom use changed greatly(=76.2, P<0.001), the proportions of consistent condom use and commercial sex behaviors among 15~24 age groups were 50.9% and 22.5%, respectively.

Conclusions: Sexual Mixing Patterns are weakly assortive,potential HIV transmission risk exists, and high risk behavior often occur among MSM and their sexual partners.
