Rainbow Europe Map & Index: now in two separate packages on sexual orientation and gender identity

Published: July 11, 2011

On 17 May 2011, to coincide with the International Day against Homophobia & Transphobia, ILGA-Europe produced Rainbow Europe Map & Index reflecting European Countries’ laws and administrative practices which protect or violate the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people in one package.

Following the great success of this project and identified need for separate maps/index for each ground individually, we produced two packages: one for sexual orientation, and the other for gender identity.

We particular hope that the map and index on gender identity will be helpful resources for LGBTI organisations in their work for gender identity equality. The individual maps and index clearly demonstrate that European countries are overall ahead in their laws and administrative practices when it comes to sexual orientation equality. Often those countries which have high scores on sexual orientation are lagging behind on their performance on gender identity equality.

We are also very proud that our map and index on gender identity which was produced in cooperation with Transgender Europe is the first of its kind.
