Issues: The abstract represents HIV prevention programme for men who have sex with men (MSM), which is based on the changes of the epidemic situation in our region (Kazan, the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia). The programme is implemented under Republic Fight and Prevention Center against AIDS and Infectious Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Description: The "Homosexuals’ Club" opened in Kazan in 1992. It was the year of abolition of the law of criminal responsibility for homosexuality in Russia. Club’s aim is to prevent HIV amongst homosexuals. The members of the club are HIV-positive and HIV-negative gays and lesbians. There are two trainers for every group. They are psychiatrist and psychologist (man and woman). The professionals use individual/group counselling (training) and informal conversation (tea/coffee meetings and holiday parties) in their work. All members of the Club have an opportunity to get voluntary and confidential HIV testing and pre/post-test counselling. All partners of discordant and concordant pairs are consulted together if they want it. The members increase knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS, routs of transmission and means to prevent it. People with chemical dependence are consulted by psychiatrist in the beginning of their disease. Professionals also help homosexuals to re-establish their medical insurance policy.
Lessons learned: The prevention programme helps:
1 – to get voluntary and confidential HIV testing and pre/post-test counselling.
2 – to confront discrimination.
3 – to get support of group, psychological and social help.
Next steps: HIV prevention programme is effective in the work with homosexuals. It is based on the Republic Fight and Prevention Center against AIDS and ID of MH of RT and that is why HIV testing and pre/post-test counseling are available for members of Club. They are free. Such form of prevention programme helps to diminish epidemic index of infected homosexuals in our region.
