Out-Right Namibia (ORN) Condemns Unethical reporting on the Pink Party
with Friends in The Villager.
Out-Right Namibia (ORN), an NGO that focuses on the advancement and protection of the
human rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Namibians,
hereby responds to an article published The Villager on 10 September 2012, titled “Pink
ORN condemns the unethical, derogatory, discriminatory and false reporting on the “Pink
Evening with Friends” and deplores Editor Confidence Musariri for promoting homophobia,
transphobia and reinforcing the negative stereotyping of sexual minorities.
The Pink Evening with Friends is a collective initiative which gathers a diverse group of
LGBTI people, their friends, and family in a space free from discrimination and stigma. We
share and engage with our friends and family on key issues affecting our lives, but most
importantly, it is about celebrating who we are in all our diversity. It further aims to counter
the rhetoric on our non existence in Namibia, and that of homosexuality not being African.
It is thus a blatant lie that access was dependent on one’s sexual orientation – EVERYBODY
It is imperative that the media educate themselves on issues related to sexual orientation
and gender identity because, the majority, continue to disseminate subjective and fallacious
information regarding LGBTI people. If The Villager wants to gain any credibility as a media
house, it needs to improve its journalistic standards. This is not thefirst time that LGBTI
people have been misrepresented by it.
ORN demands for this statement to be published in the paper’s next edition, and hereby
notifies the public that we intend to lay an official complaint with Media Ombudsman Clement
In conclusion: Mr. Musariri, in future, DO NOT publish articles based on your personal
prejudiced opinion. As editor, you should have some understanding of the basic principles of
journalism – we hope.
