Liberia: Christians Launch Anti- Homosexual Campaign

Published: October 22, 2012

Sporadic media and community-based comments against same-sex marriage in Liberia has now grown into a full-scale national advocacy with a group of Christian organizations formally launching what it calls, “No to the legalization of homosexuality” in the country.

Under the auspices of the New Citizen Movement, Inc and in collaboration with the Church in Liberia and the Inter-Religious Council, Liberians have begun to forcefully declare their opposition to the legalization of same-sex marriage. Same sex marriage means man marrying to man, and woman marrying to woman, or the decriminalization of sodomy in the country.

The group said in a press release: “The majority of Liberians are saying ‘No to the Legalization Of Homosexualism’ in the country, because it is opposed to the Laws and Commandments of God, it corrupts our moral values and contributes to social indiscipline in the society, it is un-African and therefore foreign to our culture and current way of life, it is a threat to reproduction and future population of our country, it is inherently a conduit for the spread of HIV/AIDS, accepting or approving such a practice brings a curse upon all of our nation, and, to recognize a same-sex marriage prepares our future government to subsequently recognize the marriage of a man to an animal by redefining the universally understood meaning of marriage.”

The anti-gay movement has embarked upon national signature scheme to be formally launched Saturday, November 10th, 2012 on Bushrod Island, Monrovia.

“We therefore kindly request your support to enable us reach out budget goal of US$10,000.00 (Ten Thousand United States Dollars) to cover media publicity, transportation, printing of t-shirts, etc for the formal launching of the campaign on the date mentioned.”
