Lebanese rights group fighting gay stigma surrounding AIDS

“The stereotype that AIDS is a ‘gay disease’ is a stereotype of the West,” says Georges Azzi, president of HELEM, a Beirut-based rights organization. “I didn’t have this idea that AIDS was a gay disease until I went to France,” Azzi said. He argued that because Lebanese society has been historically closed to discussing sex-related topics.
