Hacktivists from online group Anonymous have taken action after Uganda’s parliamentary Speaker Rebecca Kadaga said the country’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill would be passed before the end of 2012.
Speaker Kadaga made the remarks on Monday and said the move would be a “Christmas gift” to Ugandan Christians, despite vigorous and vocal international criticism over the draft legislation.
The bill had initially proposed the death penalty for homosexual acts, but still presents an array of jail terms for those convicted, including life imprisonment in certain circumstances.
In response to the decision, Anonymous New Jersey released names, email addresses and other relevant information of members of Uganda’s Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.
In a statement on Monday the group said: “The ‘Kill the gays’ bill has been reintroduced into the Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs in Uganda… Let them know that we will not let this bill pass. And if it does they should expect us.”
