THE steady increase of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases among men-having-sex-with-men (MSM) can be attributed to their continued failure to use condom, especially when having anal sex.

Speaking at the Philippine National Convention on AIDS last Friday, DOH–National HIV/AIDS Surveillance and Strategic Information Unit Deputy Manager Noel Palaypayon said majority of the MSMs are practicing bareback anal sex.

"Though 66 percent of MSMs practice anal sex, only 37 percent used condoms during their last anal sex. This shows risky behaviors," said Palaypayon.

He noted a recent DOH study showing that 37 percent did not use condoms because they are not available; 26 percent said they don’t like to use condoms; 20 percent said it is not necessary to use condoms; 8.7 percent had their partners objected; 2.9 percent forgot to use a condom during sexual intercourse; 1.7 percent don’t know how to use condom; and 2 percent said condoms are expensive.
