Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff has suspended the production and distribution of sex education films for schools that include gay and lesbian scenes intended to fight homophobia.

According to the BBC, President Rousseff believes the material is not suitable for young viewers and she decided to suspend the films. However, evangelical church groups and their supporters have also applied pressure, saying they believed the material promoted homosexuality.

Spokesman Gilberto Carvalho said that President Rousseff believed the films produced by the ministries of health and education did not offer an “objective picture of homosexuality.”
