Bill mandates gay history in public schools

The contributions of gays and lesbians to American society would be part of the required lesson plans in social studies classes in California public schools under a bill passed Thursday by the state Senate.

If the bill is adopted by the state Assembly, which is likely given its Democratic majority, and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, California would become the first state to require the inclusion of notable gay Americans in lessons about the civic contributions made by various groups.

Opponents say the curriculum change adds non-essential material to a school day that is already short on time and puts inappropriate emphasis on sexuality.
Those who had advocated for the law say the way that history is taught will promote tolerance and inclusion, potentially heading off bigotry and bullying among schoolchildren.
